Clinical Research Projects at the Stone Research Foundation
Health care practices increasingly rely on Outcomes Research to evaluate
the effectiveness of different treatment options. The Stone Research Foundation
uses validated outcome tools to evaluate how our surgical patients do over time,
from both physician and patient perspectives. The Stone Research Foundation has
conducted Outcomes Research studies on novel biologic surgical options since
1991. The results of these long-term outcomes studies are fueling the paradigm
shift away from bionics, towards biologics.

- Meniscus Transplantation Study
This work documents the long-term outcomes of innovative techniques to replace knee joint tissues biologically rather than with artificial materials. The techniques were developed at The Stone Clinic. The outcomes were documented objectively by the Stone Research Foundation and are now available to surgeons around the world.
- Articular Cartilage Paste Grafting Study
Greater understanding of the composition and cellular viability of the paste graft matrix in humans will provide the basis for improvements with stem cells, growth factors, and bio adhesives. This study is actively underway. Further studies are also planned to improve the current technique.
- Articular Cartilage OCD Lesions Study
This study demonstrates the effectiveness of paste grafting in large cartilage defects.
- Articular Cartilage Second Look Biopsy Study
This study seeks to compare quality of early repair tissue, current articular cartilage status as determined by MRI, and patient reported subjective outcome between microfracture and articular cartilage paste graft patients.
- Achilles Tendon Rupture Study
Currently most torn Achilles tendons are repaired through a large, open incision. This study documents the success of
percutaneous repair and could revolutionize this treatment.
